Description

The Jamaican mango is one of the three endemic hummingbirds that can be found in Jamaica.

The Jamaican mango is primarily black in colour with scattered iridescent colours such as magenta, yellow and green on its body especially its crown.

Both male and female birds of this species look the same in appearance with the exception of immature males which have blue throats up until 2 years of age.

The Jamaican mango is generally 11-12 cm in length and 8.5g in weight.

 

Diet

Jamaican mangos feed on the nectar of flowering plants.

 

Mating

Jamaican mangos mate all year round especially during the months of January to May. Nests are small and cup-shaped and made of woven fibres.

 

Habitat

The Jamaican mango can be found in a variety of habitats such as open low-land habitats and forest edges.

 

Fun Fact !

Jamaican mangoes travel to lower altitudes from June to August when plants stop flowering in higher altitudes
